In the medical field, related work to stop the spread of infectious diseases has been ongoing. The healthcare industry seizes this opportunity to seek development, and the plastics industry is its important alliance.

One potential weapon is: antibacterial plastics.

Patients and doctors often touch plastic surfaces. Medical plastics can have resistance to bacteria and other diseases.

"At present, there are not many cases where antibacterial plastics are used on the contact surface." Said Mansish Nandi, senior product designer of XX Plastics.

He said that antibacterial plastics are not a panacea.

 

 

"The main way to prevent the spread of infectious diseases is still cleaning," Nandi said. "Antimicrobial plastics are a kind of insurance."

 

Although every hospital has a corresponding cleaning procedure, such a system needs to be implemented manually, and each hospital is different, and there may be some loopholes. Antibacterial plastics can just make up for these loopholes. Antibacterial plastics can also play a role when the patient is still in the ward.

"When the patient is discharged from the hospital, the ward will be sterilized and cleaned," Nandi said. "Therefore, it is not a bad thing to have one more protection during the hospitalization."

Antibacterial plastics include many types, some can prevent bacteria, and some can kill bacteria.

Started to study the cleaner's response to different polymers, looking for an effective solution to the patient's long-term contact with the surface of the object. "This is an ongoing study, we have not yet reached results, but we hope to achieve something before the end of this year." Nandi said.

Nandi pointed out that polyetherimide resin has been proven to be suitable for different types of disinfection.

"This material can resist four types of sterilization, which is a big advantage for equipment designers," he said. "There is a wider choice."
